GNAA FOOTBALL GENERAL INFORMATION

gnfootball01 gnfootball02 gnfootball03

The Buckeye Football program was established in 1995 when it was re-branded from the Gulls to the Buckeyes. At that time there was one team with 35 players; today the GNAA football program has grown to 14 teams with nearly 300 players. The Buckeyes have a rich tradition competing in the Virginia Beach City League on behalf of the Great Neck Athletic Association.

Our program is about much more than wins or losses although each year many of our teams make the City playoffs, with several winning City Championships. The City considers the Buckeye program the Gold Standard when it comes to youth football and how the program is run.

Our practices are held at Great Neck Middle School.

Preseason practices start Thursday, July 30, 2015. Practice/conditioning is held every week night of the week during the month of August. The season begins the first Saturday in September and runs until mid-November.

Great Neck Athletic Association Football offers a co-ed flag division for ages 6-8, and 9-10 and a tackle program. The tackle program has the following divisions:

Team Age Weight
Mighty Mites 8-9 105lbs
B - Team (Developmental) 10-12 125lbs
A - Team 10-12 125*lbs
150lb Team 12-14 150lbs

*Most players are well under the maximum weight limit. A weight requirement was established to encourage a safe playing environment. There are some exceptions. If you are 8-9 you can play Mighty Mites as a “stripper” if you weigh up to 115 lbs. If you are 12 years old and weigh less than 115 pounds you can play on the 125 lbs team. Many players play both Middle School football and Buckeyes and are encouraged to do so. (If you play middle school ball you can’t play for the Developmental team.)We have a great working relationship with the area’s middle schools and are philosophies are similar in that the more football your son is exposed to the better he will become.

A player’s age as of September 1st determines his eligibility.

All players must weigh in before participation. A second weigh in for the 125/150 lbs teams will be required for all players within 15 pounds of the maximum weight of their league. Any player who fails to attend a second weigh in will be removed from the team roster. If a player weighs in at more than 10 pounds over the weight limit that player is disqualified from participation for the season. If 10 pounds or less the player has two more attempts to make weight. The roster cut off is usually the first week of October.

The registration fee is $65.00 for flag; $125.00 for tackle. Limited Scholarships are available to those in financial need. The flag players will be provided a jersey they can keep. Mouthpieces are suggested for flag and are required for all practices/games in tackle. Chin straps will also be provided; however, many players choose to purchase their own. Athletic cups are suggested but also optional.
*12 Year old can weigh no more than 115 to play in the 125lb division. In the Mighty Mites division a player can weigh up to 115, but will be restricted where he can play. Please email us with any questions.

Volunteer positions are always available. Please contact us at www.GNAAsports.org for additional information.
